Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan reveals details of talks with Lavrov

Sirojiddin Mukhriddin said the parties had discussed migration and regional security issues.

On May 19, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Mukhriddin received RF Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov. Speaking at the briefing after the meeting, Mukhriddin said the parties had discussed a wide range of issues and signed the cooperation programme for 2021, the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan reported.

He said bilateral talks were fruitful and substantive. Particular attention was paid to the slowdown in bilateral trade to about US$ 1 billion in 2020.

Positively evaluating cooperation in addressing migration issues, the parties highlighted the importance of raising awareness of and ensuring compliance of labour migrants from Tajikistan in the Russian Federation with RF legislation.

Lavrov said the Russian Federation would help the Republic modernise the Armed Forces, build a modern border outpost on one of the sections of the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan and confront the terrorist threats.

The Ministers agreed to resume normal air services between the countries as soon as possible so that about 20,000 students from Tajikistan would resume their studies at Russian universities.

The RF Minister of Foreign Affairs highly evaluated the efforts taken by the authorities of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to resolve the border dispute.
