Kazakhstan diverts flood waters to the Caspian Sea

The shallowing sea received a billion cubic metres of water.

Kazakhstan diverted about a billion cubic metres of flood waters to the Caspian Sea, the press office of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic reports.

4 canals are used for this purpose: Baksay, Naryn, Chernaya Rechka and Sokolok for this purpose. They will carry up to 12 million cubic metres per day after coastal defence work is completed: Kazvodkhoz specialists have made it possible. In 2023, a state of emergency was declared in Aktau Region of Kazakhstan due to the shallowing of the Caspian Sea. In early April, floods gripped the country.

Minister Nurzhan Nurzhigitov emphasised the importance of filling the lakes with flood waters, noting that waters are also diverted to the Zhaiyk River to feed the estuaries and groundwater deposits of the Oyil River.

Today, the country’s largest water storage reservoirs are filled to capacity: by 100% in Akmola and North Kazakhstan Region, by 98,6% in Karaganda Region, by 97% in Aktobe Region.
