Leaders of Kazakhstan and UN discuss Afghanistan-related issues

Kazakhstan expressed its readiness to contribute to global efforts in restoring a normal life in Afghanistan.

On June 4, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev held an online meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. They discussed the approaches to ensuring security in the region, cooperation in combating the pandemic and addressing the challenges of climate change, the press office of Akorda reported.

Discussing the situation in Afghanistan, the interlocutors focused on ensuring security in Central Asia. In this context, Kazakhstan expressed its readiness to continue to provide support to Afghanistan and contribute to global efforts in settling the situation in Afghanistan. The UN Secretary-General emphasised the importance in involving the Central Asian countries in achieving this goal.

Noting Kazakhstan’s commitment to upholding the interests of the Group of Landlocked Developing Countries, the UN Secretary-General emphasised that these efforts were of the utmost relevance during the crisis caused by the pandemic.

The President of Kazakhstan informed the UN Secretary-General of the decision to take part in the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow in November, which was expected to provide improved national solutions to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

The UN Secretary-General noted Kazakhstan’s efforts to implement the global anti-nuclear agenda. Antonio Guterres highly evaluated Kazakhstan’s leadership in this strategic area. The President of Kazakhstan invited Antonio Guterres to attend the international conference marking the 30th anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk test site.
