Turkmenistan and UN discuss urban development issues

President Serdar Berdimuhamedov met with Acting Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme Michal Mlynár.

On April 16, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov received Acting Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Michal Mlynár in Ashgabat. The main topic under discussion was urban development issues, Turkmenistan: Golden Age reported.

Berdimuhamedov said Turkmenistan is ready to promote cooperation with UN-Habitat. In this context, the President proposed expanding contacts in the field of urban planning legislation and studying modern legal methods and mechanisms. In his opinion, this will contribute to sustainable development of cities.

The President put forward the initiatives to establish cooperation in implementing global programmes and strategies to create high-tech, eco-friendly, disaster-resistant and habitable cities. He proposed intensifying the exchange of best practices in the creation and management of urban infrastructures through public-private partnerships. Serdar Berdimuhamedov added that Turkmenistan is ready to consider UN-Habitat’s proposals on these issues.
