The Soros Foundation-Kyrgyzstan is set to cease its activities in Kyrgyzstan. This decision was prompted by the adoption of the law that imposes restrictions on the activities of non-profit organisations, INTERFAX.RU reported.
In its official statement, the Foundation said the requirements and restrictions imposed by the new law are overly severe and interfere with the activities of the organisation in the Republic.
The Foundation started its work in Kyrgyzstan in 1993, supporting various initiatives totally worth $115 million. The range of funded projects includes the initiatives in such areas as healthcare, technology, education and information technology.
The Foundation emphasises that it receives aid funds mainly from overseas, and changes in the national legislation can therefore have a serious impact on its activities.
Earlier, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov denied information about the persecution of non-profit organisations, insisting that the new law does not provide for such actions. He guaranteed that the state would neither impose restrictions or persecute.
