Minister of Energy bears liability for accident at Bishkek thermal power plant

The Minister of Energy of the Republic and his deputy were reprimanded.

Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan Bakyt Torobaev reported on the work done by the interagency commission to determine the causes of an accident at the thermal power plant in Bishkek. According to the official, Minister of Energy Taalaibek Ibraev was reprimanded for his failure to properly prepare the plant for the heating season, Tazabek reported.

As was reported, the accident occurred on February 2, 2024, when several units of the thermal power plant broke down, which led to disruptions in heat and hot water supply for half of the city.

5 people were injured in the accident. After the accident, the Bishkek Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation and opened a criminal case. The Government set up a special interagency commission consisting of 23 members.

Torobaev reported in detail on the technological causes of the accident. He said the Minister of Energy was reprimanded for his failure to properly prepare the plant for the heating season, and his deputy was severely reprimanded. The names of some perpetrators will remain unknown until the end of the investigation.

The damage caused to the thermal power plant is estimated at 69 million soms, or $7.7 million, and it will cost about $250 million to repair the power plant.
