Weather forecasters caution residents of Uzbekistan about potential flooding

Residents of 9 foothill and mountainous regions are at risk of flooding; they were advised to take precautions.

Weather forecasters have cautioned citizens of Uzbekistan about the potential risk of flooding and mudslides that could affect 9 regions of the Republic. According to forecasts, heavy rains and wind gusts of 15-20 m/s are expected in the mountainous and suburban areas of the country from April 12 to 15, the press office of the Hydrometeorological Service Agency of Uzbekistan reported.

According to experts, Kashkadarya, Surkhandarya, Samarkand, Navoi, Jizzakh, Tashkent, Namangan, Fergana and Andijan Region may experience extreme weather conditions, which could lead to flooding and mudslides.

Forecasters strongly recommend that local residents take necessary precautions and all possible safety measures to mitigate the impact of the upcoming extreme weather events.

Uzgidromet specialists note that the average temperature in the country increases by 1,5% every year, which creates a heightened risk of flooding and mudslides for years to come. In previous years, human fatalities due to floods and mudslides were reported in Uzbekistan. In 2021, 8 people were killed in Namangan Region, and in 2022, 5 people became the victims of mudflows in Jizzakh Region.
