Kazakhstan declares state of emergency over flooding in 9 regions

About 16,000 people are taking part in rescue and salvage operations.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kazakhstan reported on the current situation as flooding continues in the country. As of today, a state of emergency has been declared in 9 regions, Zakon.kz reported.

Senior Officer of the Committee for Civil Defence and Military Units at the Ministry of Emergency Situations Erasyl Saypash noted that rescue operations are continuing unabated.

Currently, about 16,000 people and over 2,500 machines are involved in rescue and salvage operations.

Over 85,000 people were rescued and evacuated, including about 30,000 children. More than 8 million cubic metres of water were pumped out, and over 1,000 sandbags and 1 ton of inert material were placed as barriers to stop flood waters.

Currently, 29 local emergencies continue to exist in 9 regions of Kazakhstan, including Aktobe, Karaganda and Pavlodar Region, among others.
