Tram service may resume in Uzbek capital

This type of public transportation in Tashkent ceased to serve in 2016, but the Uzbek authorities are developing a new tram project.

The Uzbek authorities are planning to restore tram services in Tashkent, Minister of Transport of Uzbekistan Ilkhom Makhkamov said in an interview, Gazeta.uz reports.

In 2016, all tram lines in Tashkent were removed due to the increased number of motor vehicles and the inefficiency of trams. According to the Minister, currently there are grounds for returning trams to the city, since a tram system is an important infrastructure for Tashkent.

Ilkhom Makhkamov informed about the joint work of Uzbekistan and French Alsacom on the feasibility study for a project on tram infrastructure construction. It envisages building tram lines between the ‘old’ and ‘new’ Tashkent and creating tram infrastructure in New Tashkent.

The Minister emphasised that a tram system is an important element of urban infrastructure. Perhaps the need for tram services was not so urgent in 2016, but currently the situation has changed.

«We are exploring where and how we will use trams within the existing infrastructure,» the Minister added.
