40 amendments to achieve gender equality come into force in Uzbekistan

The Chairperson of the Senate of Oliy Majlis said in recent years, the attitude towards women in the Republic has changed significantly.

On March 11, Chairperson of the Senate of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva delivered a speech at the 68th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York. She noted that in recent years, Uzbekistan has taken significant steps to achieve gender equality, and work is underway to support women, the press office of the UN Commission on the Status of Women reported.

The priority theme for the 2024 session is «Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective». Narbaeva emphasised that Uzbekistan adopted a new Constitution last year, confirming its status as a secular state.

Uzbekistan has recently adopted over 40 legislative acts aimed at implementing the principles of gender equality. The Chairperson of the Senate noted that the attitude towards women in the country has changed significantly; the authorities pay close attention to women’s education, career development and support women’s entrepreneurial initiatives. The National Social Protection Agency is set up, including to provide targeted assistance to women and girls.

The Chairperson of the Senate informed that Samarkand will host the Asian Women’s Forum on May 13-14. The organisers include UN Women.
