President of Tajikistan expresses dissatisfaction with extravagant events in the country

The President of Tajikistan said extravaganza damages the economy.

President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon met with members of public organisations, religious leaders and scientists of the country on the eve of the month of Ramadan. The President shared his concern about the use of large amounts of money on family and religious holidays, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reported.

Rahmon highlighted the importance of observing the ban on luxurious weddings, birthdays and other events, including religious holidays. He expressed his concern that some citizens of the country continue harmful practices of superfluity, which is hampering the increase in the welfare of society.

Noting that the Koran condemns extravaganza, the President instructed the Government and government agencies to ensure that citizens of the country obey the law and do not spend money on luxury.

The President dwelt on pilgrimages to holy places, which some citizens make almost every year. Rahmon noted that more than 12 billion somoni or over $1 billion have been spent on pilgrimages during the years of independence of Tajikistan. The President said these funds could have been used to develop housing construction and social infrastructure and help needy people.

Rahmon suggested that people making the pilgrimage for the second and third time should spend the funds on their families, education of children, landscaping and assistance to needy people.
