Vehicles in Tashkent to be marked with ecolabels

Tashkent will be divided into several environmental zones, into which only vehicles with certain labels will be allowed.

A diagnostic centre will soon be opened in the capital of Uzbekistan, where car owners will have an environmental inspection of their vehicles. Depending on the level of emissions, car owners will be provided with the coloured labels with radio frequency identification chips (RFID), Gazeta.uz reported.

A new diagnostic centre was set up at the road safety department in Tashkent. This is where service technicians will inspect vehicles. Once the inspection is complete, car owners will get the labels of different colours — green, yellow or red. They must be glued to the car windshield.

The city authorities are set to divide the city into several environmental zones and start gradually restricting entry into these zones depending on the level of emissions from vehicles. Ecolabels will facilitate the project implementation.

Vehicles not authorized to enter the environmental zones will be prohibited from entering. Violators will face penalties. The money raised in this way will be used to improve the environmental situation.

Commenting on this initiative, Deputy Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of Uzbekistan Obidjon Kudratov said today vehicles emit about 60% of pollutants.
