Tajikistan and Uzbekistan set up gauging stations to monitor transboundary watercourses

2 new gauging stations — Patar and Sarvak were put into operation on the border between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to monitor transboundary watercourses. According to Sputnik, the stations are set up along the Northern and Greater Fergana Canals and will ensure more accurate irrigation water flow measurement in the two countries.

This important step was discussed at the meeting of the Tajikistan-Uzbekistan working group of integrated transboundary water management in Central Asia. The participants noted that it is difficult to effectively manage transboundary watercourses and monitor their use within established limits without reliable water measurement systems. In particular, the absence of a properly functioning automated system in the Syrdarya River basin hampered the process.

Minister of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan Daler Juma expressed belief that automated data recording and transmission at the new gauging stations will ensure more efficient watercourse management and strengthen mutual trust between the two countries.
