Sadyr Japarov to run for re-election

Election is scheduled to take place in 2026.

President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov announced his intention to run for a second term in 2026, Interfax reports.

The details about the President’s second term plans were reported by Press Secretary Askat Alagozov. In his post on social media, Alagozov noted that Japarov’s participation in the election for a second term would be a consistent step, given the importance of long-term international projects for the country.

Sadyr Japarov became the President of Kyrgyzstan in 2021. The election took place on January 10. The President of Kyrgyzstan has been in office for 5 years. He may be re-elected for a consecutive term once only — this is a Constitution requirement.

Earlier, the President of Kyrgyzstan signed the Law on extradition of citizens of Kyrgyzstan sentenced to imprisonment in another state to their home country. In accordance with international regulations, Kyrgyzstan may modify the prison term or grant pardon to its citizen.
