Kazakhstan agrees with China and Uzbekistan on water cooperation

Kazakhstan is preparing to enter into agreements on water resources development with China and Uzbekistan.

Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan Nurzhan Nurzhigitov noted at the government meeting that signing an agreement on water resources development with China and Uzbekistan is a necessary step to promote interstate relations, Tengrinews.kz reports.

Nurzhan Nurzhigitov informed that it is planned to sign the intergovernmental agreements on joint management and use of transboundary waters between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan and the agreements on water allocation in transboundary river basins between Kazakhstan and China. He emphasised the importance and need to promote international water and energy cooperation.

The Minister dwelt on the draft law on ratification of the Convention on the Law of Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses, which was submitted to the Senate of Kazakhstan for consideration. Nurzhigitov noted that the agreement was signed in 37 countries, of which only Uzbekistan neighbours on Kazakhstan.
