President of Kyrgyzstan toughens penalties for theft of livestock

Persons aged 14 or older will be held responsible for this crime.

In Kyrgyzstan, the Criminal Code was amended to toughen the penalties for theft of livestock. President Sadyr Japarov signed the Law to add Article 205-1 Cattle Theft to the Criminal Code, the press office of the President of Kyrgyzstan reported.

There has been no such article in the Criminal Code before. The penalty for theft of livestock varied depending on the cost of damage caused to the victim.

Under the new Article, penalties of public works, a fine of 20,000 to 50,000 soms, or up to 2 years’ imprisonment will be mandated for theft of livestock in small amounts.

Theft of livestock in significant amounts will result in punitive labour, a fine of up to 200,000 soms, or up to 5 years’ imprisonment.

Penalties for theft of livestock in large amounts, including by a group of persons, will be imprisonment for a term from 5 to 8 years and confiscation of property. Penalties for theft of livestock in very large amounts will be up to 12 years’ imprisonment and confiscation of property.
