Over 4,000 measles cases registered in Kyrgyzstan

The authorities of the Kyrgyz Republic continue to encourage citizens to get a vaccine to protect against measles.

The measles incidence rate in Kyrgyzstan has crossed the threshold of 4,000. Director of the Republican Centre for Immunoprophylaxis Gulbara Ishenapysova reported that most of the infected people are unvaccinated children under 1 year of age and children under 4 years of age who haven’t completed their vaccinations, EADaily reports.

“Not only our country, but also Kazakhstan, where over 13,000 cases have been registered, Russia (8,000) and Turkey (3,000) are facing this situation. In 2022, the epidemiological situation in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan was difficult,” the Director of the Republican Centre for Immunoprophylaxis said.

Ishenapysova noted that WHO provided additional 755,000 doses of the vaccine to Kyrgyzstan to cope with the difficult epidemiological situation.

Since September this year, a free measles vaccine is given to children under 7 years of age and adults who have been in contact with infected people. So far, 77 percent of the population has participated in the campaign. Citizens can get a vaccine until the end of November.
