President of Turkmenistan addresses ECO Summit

The President of Turkmenistan put forward the proposals to intensify trade and economic cooperation among the ECO Member States.

On November 9, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov took part in the 16th Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization in Tashkent, the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan reported.

Addressing the Summit, the President put forward the initiatives aimed at expanding trade and economic cooperation in the ECO region.

Speaking about cooperation in the fuel and energy sector, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov said Turkmenistan is ready to increase natural gas and electricity supplies to the ECO Member States. The existing facilities and those planned to be built in the country in the near future will enable Turkmenistan to meet the fuel and energy needs of its partners within the organisation.

The President highlighted the importance of strengthening partnerships in the transport and logistics sectors – the construction of roads, bridges, transport and communications hubs.

“We propose considering from a practical point of view building joint transport and logistics centres involving government agencies and private companies,” President Serdar Berdimuhamedov said.

The President of Turkmenistan focused on increasing trade among the ECO Member States as a key priority. The development of cross-border trade and joint efforts to support small and medium-sized businesses will give new impetus to interstate partnerships.

Speaking about trade and economic cooperation, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov proposed developing an ECO Framework Agreement on digital technologies and e-commerce. He reminded that Turkmenistan, as Chairman of the ECO in 2021, put forward the proposal to create economic corridors within the ECO.
