The authorities of Uzbekistan are set to implement an ambitious project aimed at enhancing the ability of forest ecosystems in the country to adapt to climate change. Jointly with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), they will launch an eponymous initiative. The project envisages attracting $4 million in investment and will be financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), Deputy Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of Uzbekistan Zhusipbek Kazbekovin reported exclusively to CentralAsia.news.
The project is to be implemented from 2023 to 2027. It will also help preserve and enhance forest biodiversity.
Previously, Uzbekistan jointly with the GEF and FAO launched another project aimed at assessing the effects of food systems on land use and restoration in the country. The total cost of this project is $6.5 million.
The authorities of Uzbekistan are actively cooperating with the Global Green Growth Institute on the Green Recovery Project for the Republic of Karakalpakstan aimed at mitigating the impacts of the Aral Sea crisis. $5.9 million are expected to be spent on the project until 2024. The main goals of the project are to restore the ecological balance in the region and improve living conditions of local populations.
