Samarkand will host the 21st session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 21) to the UNCCD. Executive Secretary of the Convention Ibrahim Thiaw and Minister of Environment of Uzbekistan Aziz Abdukhakimov signed the agreement. The Minister made presentations on the ongoing environmental projects aimed at combating desertification, land degradation and forest fires during the ceremony, the press office of the Government of Uzbekistan reported to CentralAsia.news.

One of the projects of particular interest envisages afforestation of an area of over 2 million hectares on the dried bottom of the Aral Sea to tackle dust and salt storms. The Central Asian University for the Studies of Environmental Protection and Climate Change was set up in Tashkent.

CRIC 21 will take place in Samarkand on November 13-17 and provide a discussion platform for building drought resilience, combating land degradation caused by climate change and supporting women’s leadership in agriculture. The main aim of the session is to develop effective solutions contributing to prevention of desertification and mitigation of climate change.
