President of Kazakhstan says country faces acute shortage of teachers

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev attended the All-Republic Congress of Teachers, which was held in Astana on their professional day.

Speaking at the event, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev said the country lacks 5,000 teachers, and this figure is not decreasing with every passing year, the press office of the President of Kazakhstan reports.

«A teacher is the crucial component in creating a new quality of our nation. It is therefore very important to provide the education system with qualified personnel. However, now our schools are facing a serious shortage of personnel,» Tokayev said at the Congress of Teachers.

The President of Kazakhstan said every fifth graduate with a degree in pedagogy cannot find a job in his specialty, and only 23 percent of teachers have the highest category. Tokayev said educational programmes need to be revised and modernised so that they meet modern realities and offer new approaches and technologies to provide the national education system with qualified personnel.

The President said the Ministry of Education should stop frequently changing qualification requirements which put pressure on teachers.
