Rahmon and Putin discuss economic, security and migration issues

The leaders of Tajikistan and Russia held talks on the sidelines of the informal CIS Summit in St. Petersburg.

On December 27, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon paid a working visit to St. Petersburg to participate in the informal CIS Summit. He had a meeting with the leader of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reported.

The interlocutors noted that the trade turnover between the countries had exceeded US$ 1 billion at the end of 2021, which was 25% more than last year. They focused on the prospects for cooperation in the metallurgy, mining, construction, healthcare, pharmaceutical, science, education and cultural sectors.

They also discussed the situation in Afghanistan. Putin noted that Moscow had supplied weapons and equipment to Tajikistan to strengthen its defence capability against a backdrop of emerging security threats.

The interlocutors touched upon the promotion of the Russian language in the Central Asian republic. Emphasising that language proficiency helped migrants work in Russia, the leader of the Russian Federation noted that about 1 million citizens of Tajikistan were currently residing and working in the Russian Federation, whose remittances totalled about US$ 1.7 billion last year.
