Tokayev dissatisfied by quality of Internet and communications services in Kazakhstan

The President of Kazakhstan noted that it had become an elementary norm for many providers to sell a “pig in a poke”.

On October 27, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev attended the Digital Bridge annual international forum. Speaking at the forum, the leader of the Republic actualized a number of areas focusing on the integration of digital technologies and raised problematic issues related to the functional quality of the Internet and communications services in the country, the press office of the President of Kazakhstan reported.

The President has repeatedly made remarks about the poor-quality operation of the global network and other communications.

The leader of the Republic noted that it had become common practice with the majority of providers to sell a “pig in a poke” to users. They advertise some parameters, but in reality they provide completely different ones, and not for the better. Analytical data show that the discrepancy ranges from 40 to 50% in the capital. In fact, this was consumer fraud, such a practice must be eradicated resolutely, the President said.

In this regard, the President instructed that the executive authorities draft the laws providing for the administrative basis and sanctions for such violations. Noting that there was frequent talk about the nearly 100% Internet coverage of the territory of Kazakhstan, Tokayev highlighted the need to figure out whether such a conjuncture actually existed, or whether it was wishful thinking and instructed to investigate this issue.
