Tokayev calls on UN to promote ecological restoration

The President of Kazakhstan emphasised that ecological restoration and environmental protection was a step in the right direction to achieving sustainable development in the years until 2030.

On May 25, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev addressed the international forum convened by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The online Global Roundtable on Extractive Industries brought together the heads of state, government and global organisations, the website of Akorda reported.

In his speech, Tokayev defined environmental protection as the dominant aspect. He said Kazakhstan, strongly committed to implementing the Paris Agreement, was the first to adopt an integrated policy for climate change aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The President defined environmental safety in extractive industries as an absolute priority, noting that Kazakhstan was currently working on a low-carbon development programme for the years until 2050.

Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev called for united efforts so that there would be no lagging countries and invited to work thoroughly on the agenda for the transition to sustainability in the years until 2030.

The leader of Kazakhstan noted that the widespread adoption of sound approaches and effective investment policies would contribute to greening the global economy. This requires mobilizing sufficient financial resources from private and public sources. The President of Kazakhstan emphasised that ecological restoration and environmental protection was a step in the right direction to achieving sustainable development in the years until 2030.
