RF Embassy in Dushanbe puts citizenship applications on hold

In the first three months of 2023, over 44,000 citizens of Tajikistan received Russian citizenship.

The RF Embassy in Tajikistan has suspended the processing of citizenship applications. This announcement was released on October 25, TASS reports.

The processing of citizenship applications was suspended due to the entry into force of the new Federal Law On Citizenship of the Russian Federation dated April 28, 2023. For example, the decision on granting citizenship is made not by the President, but by the Ministry of Internal Affairs or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. To prevent a fraudulent marriage with Russian citizens to gain citizenship, the Law sets forth a simplified procedure for acquiring Russian citizenship only in the presence of common children.

The RF Ministry of Internal Affairs reports that citizens of Tajikistan frequently apply for Russian citizenship. In the first three months of 2023, over 106,000 foreign nationals received Russian citizenship, of whom the majority are citizens of Tajikistan — 44,900.
