On August 29, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov met with the Ambassador of the European Union Diego Ruiz Alonso, who is completing his mission in the country. The head of MFA thanked the diplomat for the contribution to the development of cooperation between Ashgabat and the EU. Rashid Meredov noted that the partnership between Turkmenistan and the European Union has demonstrated effectiveness at the bilateral level and within the «Central Asia — EU» format.
The diplomats stressed the importance of the inter-parliamentary dialogue, holding events on the protection of human rights, and the meeting of the EU-Turkmenistan committee. Rashid Meredov and Diego Ruiz Alonso underlined the importance of implementing student exchange program Erasmus+ and cooperation within the «green» transformation.
The European Union opened its embassy in Turkmenistan in 2019. Diego Ruiz Alonso officially became the head of the EU diplomatic mission in Ashgabat in 2020.
