Kumis Festival in Kyrgyzstan brings together 5,000 guests

Visitors could learn how the national drink is prepared.

The Kumis Ethnographic Festival in Kyrgyzstan brought together about 5,000 guests. Visitors could taste the traditional drink kumis and learn about the life and traditions of nomads, MIR 24 reports.

The ethno village with about 20 yurts was deployed in the Chunkurchak pasture, not far from the capital city. The drink of nomads was offered to guests in each yurt.

One of the participants of the Festival, Aidai, shared the secret of making kumis. She explained that morning mare’s milk is poured into a special leather bag, pre-lubricated with ghee. Then kumis is beaten, and the more it is beaten, the sweeter it becomes.

Guests of the Ethnographic Festival could visit a cattle fair that featured different horse breeds. A horse named Umnyy, who weighs about a tonne, was purchased specifically for the national game. Felt makers, weavers and potters presented their works, and designers demonstrated their vision of the nomad style.
