The first separation surgery of conjoined twins, or Siamese twins in the medical language, was performed successfully in the department of neonatal surgery of the Shifobakhsh National Medical Centre of Tajikistan. The families and relatives of the twins expressed satisfaction with the conditions at the Centre and the professional skills of the local specialists, the press office of the Ministry of Health reported to CentralAsia.news.
The babies were delivered by caesarean section, after which the doctors found that one of the babies had died, and the other was in a normal condition. The head of the deceased baby was attached to the back of another baby. Thanks to the professional skills of the local surgeons, the twins were successfully separated.
Currently, congenital malformations, or conjoined twins are one of the most serious health problems worldwide. The introduction of this method has given the doctors of the Medical Centre good experience in performing such a surgery.
