Tajikistan recognizes impossibility of combating glacier melt

Deputy Chairperson of the Committee for Environmental Protection Kiyomzoda made this statement.

The Committee for Environmental Protection held a press conference in the capital of Tajikistan. The event was chaired by Deputy Chairperson of the Committee Zarafo Kiyomzoda. She stated Tajikistan is very concerned about glacier melting, the press office of the Committee reported.

The Deputy Chairperson emphasised that it is late to and even impossible combat glacier melt under current conditions, noting that the authorities of Tajikistan are planning to take additional measures to mitigate the impact of the natural hazard. These measures include tree planting and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Over three decades the Republic has lost over 1,000 glaciers. According to Deputy Minister of Energy Jamshed Shoimzoda, these processes have a devastating impact on the formation of drinking water reserves and electric power supply for local populations.

President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon called on the world community to set up the International Glacier Protection Fund and declare 2025 the International Year of Glacier Preservation.
