Some sections of the highway are covered in snow up to 10 metres in height and over 400 metres in width.

Traffic was suspended on the Dushanbe-Chanak highway that runs through Khujand in in Tajikistan on March 14 at 6 pm. It was decided to close temporarily the highway as heavy snow and avalanches had caused disruption across the region. At the moment, some sections of the highway have been cleared of snow, the press office of the branch of the Innovative Road Solutions (IRS) company reports.

They said the Meteorological Agency and the Committee for Emergency Situations had issued severe weather warnings a few days ago, but a number of drivers ignored the warnings and drove their cars into avalanche areas.

One driver and his passengers were injured in avalanches on the Dushanbe-Chanak highway. Rescuers from the Committee for Emergency Situations came to help and saved them from the snow captivity.

The 79th kilometre of the highway was covered in snow up to 8-10 metres in height and over 400 metres in width.  An area of snow on two sections of the highway were 500 metres in width.
