AIIB provides financing for construction of hydropower plant in Kyrgyzstan

At the initial stage, the international organisation plans to earmark $500 million to implement the project.

Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Akylbek Japarov held talks with President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank Jin Liqun at the Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund in Washington. The interlocutors considered providing financing for the construction of a hydropower plant in Kyrgyzstan, the press office of the Government of Kyrgyzstan reported.

Japarov dwelt on the problems related to water and energy supply to the population facing not only Kyrgyzstan, but also other countries of the Central Asian region. In this context, he emphasised the importance of the construction of the Kambarata-1 hydropower plant.

Japarov came up with the proposal to the AIIB President to provide financing for the project. Jin Liqun said the Bank is open to participating in financing the project, noting that the World Bank had approved financing in the amount of $500 million for the construction of this hydropower plant.

The interlocutors agreed to set up a working group that would elaborate on this issue in the near future.

Japarov invited Jin Liqun to join in the energy investment forum, which will be held in Vienna in June 2024.
