Tokayev calls on CIS Council to develop common approaches to water resource management

Along with other topical issues, attention was paid to climate change challenges that exacerbate water supply problems.

On October 14, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev chaired the meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the CIS Member States in a narrow format in the capital of the Republic. The meeting focused on the important issues of humanitarian exchange, security and other aspects of cooperation, the press office of Akorda reported to CentralAsia.news.

At the beginning of the high-level meeting, the Chairman congratulated on behalf of his counterparts and on his own behalf President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov, who is participating for the first time in the forum face-to-face as a member of the Council and wished the Turkmen leader great success on his responsible high post.

Focusing on the climate change dilemma in the business section of the meeting, the President emphasised that climate change is exacerbating the water supply problem almost on the entire territory of the Commonwealth.

Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev noted that the work is underway in international formats to find mutually acceptable solutions to this problem. However, the time has come to develop common approaches to achieving water security throughout the CIS. In this regard, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan called on the CIS Executive Committee to adopt specific tools for the efficient and mutually beneficial use of transboundary water resources.
