United States calls Kyrgyzstan a bright light of media freedom in the region

Kyrgyzstan has risen 7 positions in the 2022 World Press Freedom Index.

On October 7, Head of the Information Policy Service of the Office of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Daiyrbek Orunbekov met with Acting Assistant Secretary Elizabeth Kennedy Trudeau. The interlocutors discussed a number of aspects of bilateral cooperation on information, including the promotion of freedom of expression and media freedom, the press office of the Government of Kyrgyzstan reports.

Informing that Kyrgyzstan has risen 7 positions and taken the 72nd place in the 2022 World Press Freedom Index, The Kyrgyz official said this is the result of the policy of the President of Kyrgyzstan and his attitude to freedom of expression.

Orunbekov informed the guest about the new law on mass media that had been presented for public discussion. He noted that the new law was in no way aimed at pressure or restrictions of freedom of expression.

Kennedy Trudeau said Kyrgyzstan has provided open access for the press, diplomatic missions and international organisations, stressing that official Bishkek is a bright light of media freedom in the region.
