Drowning death rate on rise in Kyrgyzstan

The Ministry of Emergency Situations is yet unable to hire a sufficient number of rescuers.

In Kyrgyzstan, the drowning death rate has increased by 18 percent compared to the last year, Acting Head of the department of civil protection of the Ministry of Emergency Situations Bolot Sharshenaliev said, Sputnik reports.

According to the rescuer, the reason is abnormal heat, which attracts a large number of tourists and complicates the work of rescue agencies. Sharshenaliev highlighted the need to hire more rescuers, but not everyone is ready to take on such responsibility. Few are willing to take this job because of low wages.

Bolot Sharshenaliyev reported that 55 people have drowned in the water reservoirs through the Republic since the beginning of the summer season, which is 18 percent more than in the same period last year. Sharshenaliev reminded that citizens should swim only in areas designated for swimming, should not swim beyond the buoys and avoid swimming in areas with watercrafts.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations regularly reminds holidaymakers that swimming while intoxicated increases the risk of drowning. It is also very important to keep an eye on children while they are swimming and not let them swim alone.
