Rahmon launches Rogun-Obigarm-Nurobod highway project

The President of Tajikistan said over $ 381 million would be spent on the project.

On June 7, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon officially launched the Rogun-Obigarm-Nurobod highway project. He said the total project cost was over 4.3 billion somoni (about US $ 381 million), the press office of the President of Tajikistan reported.

The leader of Tajikistan said the highway would be built to implement the Government’s initiatives to turn Tajikistan into a transit hub. He added that the project would be implemented in three stages.

The 30-km Obigarm-Tagikamar highway will be built at the first stage. More than US$ 178 million will be spent at this stage; the largest portion of funding is a grant of the Asian Development Bank.

The 44-km Tagikamar-Nurobod highway and 45 kilometres of the intercity road will be built at the second stage. The EBRD will provide funds through a loan.

A bridge 760 metres long will be built at the third stage. Investments will total US$ 50 million.

Rahmon noted that the new project covered 86 kilometres and was focused on ensuring road safety, expanding international relations, developing the tourism sector and creating new jobs.

The highway between Obigarm and Nurabod will replace the existing road that will be closed due to construction of the Rogun power plant.
