Mirziyoyev launches construction of solar photovoltaic power plant

A 220 kW substation and a 52-kilometre power line to the Surkhon substation will be built.

On June 1, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev arrived in Surkhandarya Region to launch the construction of a solar photovoltaic power plant in Sherabad district. Along with this facility, a 220 kW substation and a 52-kilometre power line to the Surkhon substation will be built, the press office of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan reported to CentralAsia.news.

The company Masdar from the UAE will be engaged to implement the project. It will attract US$ 260 million in direct investment to implement the project. The new facility will occupy an area of 601 hectares. It will produce 1.04 billion kWh per year. The project will help Uzbekistan conserve 340 million cubic metres of natural gas annually and supply electricity to 300,000 households.

The power plant will create thousands of new jobs, and upon activation, 120 specialists will work there. The large-scale facility is to be put into operation in August 2023.

“An opportunity to purchase electricity at 1.8 cents per kilowatt-hour is a tremendous achievement of the national economy and an important factor in ensuring the well-being of citizens of the country. The construction of the power plant, power it will generate and new infrastructure will give a strong impetus to develop the sector,” the leader of Uzbekistan emphasised.

As was reported, Uzbekistan refused to subsidize green energy production to avoid electricity price increases.
