China ready to forgive Kyrgyzstan interest on deferred payments on public external debt

On May 31, the Office of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic issued the press release announcing the decision of the People’s Republic of China to provide Kyrgyzstan with free grant and food assistance, the press office of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic reported.

Food assistance includes 40,000 tonnes of flour, 20,000 tonnes of sugar and 20,000 tonnes of vegetable oil. China will provide a 350 million yuan (about US$ 54 million) grant, which the authorities of Kyrgyzstan plan to spend on the implementation of infrastructure projects.

The authorities of the People’s Republic of China decided not to claim interest on deferred payments on the public external debt of Kyrgyzstan, and send Chinese specialists involved in the implementation of the grant projects, which had been suspended during the coronavirus pandemic.

As was reported, the authorities of the People’s Republic of China took this decision following the talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan Ruslan Kazakbayev in Xi’an in mid-May.
