President of Turkmenistan pardons 1035 prisoners

According to the decree, 982 Turkmen citizens and 53 foreign citizens were released from penal institutions.

On May 7, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov held a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers dedicated to the results of economic development for the first 4 months of the year. Within the event, the leader of the country signed a decree pardoning 1035 convicts, as reported by «Turkmenistan Today».

Berdimuhamedov noted that the act of amnesty is carried out on the occasion of Gadyr gijesi (Night of Omnipotence). He stated that those who repented of their crimes and are ready to start a new life would be released from prison.

As part of the signed decree, 982 citizens of Turkmenistan and 53 foreign citizens will be pardoned. The President instructed Deputy Prime Minister Charymyrat Amanov to do everything necessary to return convicts home to their families in a short period of time.

Berdimuhamedov also directed to give former prisoners the jobs. The instructions were given to the heads of regional, district and city administrations. The head of the state called on the amnestied citizens to work honestly.

It must be added that in Turkmenistan acts of amnesty are carried out three times a year on the occasion of big public holidays on the initiative of the country’s leader since 1999. In September last year, in honor of Independence Day, 815 prisoners were released from penitentiary institutions by decree of Berdimuhamedov.
