ACWA Power to build large wind power plant in Karakalpakstan

The project aims to support Uzbekistan in diversifying national energy mixes in line with the ongoing strategic reforms in the energy sector.

On May 3, representatives of the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Investments and Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan signed an Agreement on the implementation of a wind power plant project in Karakalpakstan with the Saudi Arabian energy company ACWA Power. This project is expected to support the country in diversifying national energy mixes in line with the ongoing strategic reforms in the energy sector, the press office of the Ministry of Energy reported to CentralAsia.news.

“This project is another important achievement of your state and strengthens the company’s commitment to working with fast-growing markets such as Uzbekistan to achieve its renewable electricity goals and SDGs,” ACWA Power Chairman Mohammad Abunayyan said.

The wind power plant will meet energy needs of about 4 million households and compensate for about 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, which will directly contribute to attaining the country’s goals to increase significantly electric power generation using renewable energy to meet the growing demand.

“We, as an energy producer, are learning a lot from our partners in Saudi Arabia while transitioning to a low-carbon economy. The ACWA Power project will contribute profoundly to this process. Our plan is to produce 25 percent of electricity from renewable sources by 2030,” Deputy Minister of Energy Sherzod Khojaev said.

Earlier, Shavkat Mirziyoyev approved the proposal for the manufacture of building materials in Karakalpakstan.
