Inflation is growing: President of Tajikistan says

Emomali Rahmon said food prices had increased by 13%.

On April 26, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon attended the 77th session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. Speaking at the online event, he informed that the inflation was growing in the Republic and GDP growth was slowing down, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reported.

Rahmon emphasised that these negative developments were recorded in Tajik economy last year. GDP decreased by 3%, as compared to 2019. The inflation in the Republic reached 9.4%, he said.

Noting that food prices had increased by 13% on average, the President of Tajikistan added that a similar trend was observed globally amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Since the beginning of this year, non-food prices had increased by 5.8% and tariffs for services – by 4%, the leader of the Republic said.

Rahmon emphasised that the timely measures taken by the Government were unable to mitigate the negative impacts of the coronavirus pandemic on the national economy.
