Tajikistan and Iran to set up defence committee

Minister of Defence of Tajikistan Sherali Mirzo and Chief of Staff for the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran discussed this issue during the talks.

The authorities of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran intend to set up a joint defence and military committee. Minister of Defence of the Republic of Tajikistan Sherali Mirzo and Chief of Staff of the IRA Armed Forces Mohammad Bagheri discussed this issue in Tehran on April 8, IRNA reported.

Speaking at the press conference, the Iranian official said the committee would define the future of cooperation between the two countries in the defence and military fields. Moreover, the visit of the Minister of Defence of Tajikistan to Iran will give an impetus to enhance bilateral relations in these fields.

Bagheri noted that partnerships between the armed forces of Tajikistan and Iran had an important role to play in achieving regional security.

After the meeting with his Tajik counterpart, IRA Minister of Defence Amir Khatami said the two countries were vulnerable to terrorist threats. The Minister of Defence of Tajikistan emphasised that the effectiveness of actions to combat terrorism depended on interaction among the states of the region.
