Dushanbe and Bishkek discuss border problems of Kyrgyzstan citizens

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan Kazakbayev expressed concern about the unexpected passport checks of his compatriots in Lakhsh Region.

On April 1, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, Sirojiddin Mukhriddin and Ruslan Kazakbaev had a meeting in the margins of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council in the capital of the Russian Federation. The parties discussed the situation with the passport checks of citizens of Kyrgyzstan in the border areas, the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan reported.

Kazakbaev expressed concern that local law enforcement officers conducted frequent document checks of citizens of Kyrgyzstan residing in Lakhsh Region of Tajikistan. He said these persons were required to either restore Tajikistan citizenship or leave the Republic.

Mukhriddin said Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan had no legal regulatory act on dual citizenship and urged his counterpart to focus on the importance of streamlining the naturalisation process specifically for residents in border areas.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan demanded from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan not to allow violations of the legal status of these persons.
