Heart of Asia – Istanbul Process Conference closes in Dushanbe

The forum focused on the prospects for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Afghanistan.

On March 30, the 9th Ministerial Conference of the Heart of Asia – Istanbul Process under the motto “Strengthening Consensus for Peace and Development” closed in the capital of Tajikistan. The agenda placed a greater emphasis on the stabilisation of the situation in Afghanistan, the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan reported.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Muhriddin noted that the Conference highlighted the importance of facilitating the intra-Afghan dialogue, initiated in September last year. He noted that this platform had made no progress in stabilizing the situation in the IRA so far.

The Minister said military tensions on the territory of the Republic, as well as terrorist activity, in particular in the border areas with Tajikistan, were rising. He added that the increase in illicit drug trade were raising great concerns.

Muhriddin informed that the Conference participants (31 countries and 16 regional and international organisations) had decided to admit the World Bank as an international donor to the Istanbul Process.

In conclusion, the Dushanbe Declaration aimed at enhancing interstate cooperation to achieve peace in the IRA was adopted.
