20,000 km of fibre optic cables run to rural areas

5,322 of the 6,500 settlements have access to the Internet.

Deputy Minister of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry of Kazakhstan Askhat Orazbek reported on the work done over the past 2 years so that urban and rural areas could access the Internet. The press office of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan issued a press release on March 6.

The Deputy Minister noted that despite the difficulties caused by the pandemic, fibre optic cables had reached 1,257 settlements. In general, people in 5,322 settlements all over the country can henceforth connect to the internet to learn and work remotely. There are 6,500 settlement in Kazakhstan.

Askhat Orazbek said 20,000 km of fibre optic cables in rural areas throughout the country had been laid and connected. To date, 99% of the population have a reliable and fast broadband connection. The Ministry has initiated the projects, providing that fibre optic cables will be laid to apartment buildings, educational institutions and other facilities at the construction stage.

The official said that the 5G network would be piloted in the capital this year. Other cities in the country will have the 5G network in 2022, and the administrative centres of the regions – in 2025.
