Tajikistan intends to complete construction of railway to Afghanistan

The Republic needs US$ 128 million to build the Tajikistan sector of the Turkmenistan-Tajikistan-Afghanistan railway.

The Tajikistan authorities intend to build the Tajikistan section of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan (TAT) railway. On February 3, the Minister of Transport Azim Ibrohim said the country needed US$ 128 million to implement the project, the press office of the Ministry reported.

The official emphasised that the Government of the Republic had initiated negotiations with ADB and EBRD about funding the project. The Minister said Tajikistan had not refused to take part in building work, and the Government Commission had approved the railway project.

The Tajikistan section of the TAT railway will run through Jaloliddin Balkhi and Pyanj districts. The steel route will connect with Kunduz city in Afghanistan.

As was reported, the leaders of Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and the IRA agreed to build the railway in 2013. The first stage of the Atamyrat-Ymamnazar (Turkmenistan)-Akina (Afghanistan) railway was launched 3 years later.

The 30-km Akina-Andkhoy section of the TAT railway, built at the expense of the Turkmenistan authorities, was put into operation in mid-January.
