Tokayev instructs to digitalize irrigation canal networks

According to the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources, the country is facing the challenges of a low flow cycle due to a decline in snow reserves.

On February 2, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev held a working meeting with Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources Magzum Mirzagaliyev, who reported on the work done in 2020 and further activities. The Ministry was tasked to start digitalizing irrigation canal networks throughout the country, the press office of the President of Kazakhstan reports.

The Minister said Kazakhstan’s agricultural sector would face the challenges during the coming growing season. Mirzagaliyev reported that the country had entered a low flow cycle due to a decline in snow reserves.

The leader of Kazakhstan highlighted the importance of fostering digitalisation of irrigation canal networks. In accordance with the President’s instructions, 119 irrigation canals on the agro-map of Kazakhstan should be digitized for 5 years.

The Minister reported on the work done in other areas under supervision. In accordance with the fisheries development programme for the period until 2030, fish production will increase from 9,000 tons to 270,000 tons for 10 years.

The President was informed of on-going mining exploration activities, measures to promote ecotourism and focus areas of national wildlife parks. In conclusion, the President gave specific instructions to the Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources.
