Refusing treatment of infections becomes criminal offense in Turkmenistan

Citizens can be imprisoned for up to two years. In some cases, the term can be extended to 5 years.

The Criminal Code of Turkmenistan has got a new Article 1191. It states that citizens will be imprisoned for refusing treatment of dangerous infectious diseases. The term of staying at the penitentiary institution depends on several factors. It was reported by the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper on September 7.

The new article is an addition to article 119 of the Criminal Code on the intentional infection with AIDS. The document states that infected citizens who maliciously refuse treatment, thereby endangering others will be punished. For such violations, they will be imprisoned for up to 2 years. In case of assisting the patient in evading treatment, the term is extended to 3 years.

If a citizen has committed a crime again, or if his actions have led to the death of another person or other negative consequences, then he will be sent to prison for up to 5 years.

The law was signed by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on August 22, 2020.

It must be added that at the moment, no cases of COVID-19 are reported in the country. The government takes all the necessary measures to prevent the spread of infection in the country.
