Turkmenistan becomes vice-chairman of 75th session of the UN General Assembly

The country has taken the relevant position in the work of the United Nations for the 6th time.

Turkmenistan was elected Deputy Chairman of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly on June 29. The country has taken this position in the work of the United Nations for the 6th time. It was reported to CentralAsia.news by “Turkmenistan Today” on June 30. 

The decision was made by the UN on the birthday of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. Moreover, this year Turkmenistan will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its neutral status. The session will take place on September 15, 2020. Volkan Bozkir, head of the Foreign Policy Committee of the Turkish Parliament, was elected its chairman.

Berdimuhamedov previously underlined that one of the important directions of Turkmenistan’s policy is to expand the strategic partnership with the UN. The international organization has repeatedly commended the work of the Turkmen leader. It is demonstrated within the framework of the adoption of the UN resolutions based on the proposals of Berdimuhamedov. 

On September 12, 2019, on the initiative of the president, the UN declared 2021 as the International Year of Peace and Confidence. 

It must be added that Turkmenistan has already been elected to several United Nations institutes (ECOSOC, UNESCO Executive Council, ECE, CND, UN Women). As a vice-chairman, the country participated in the 58th, 62nd, 64th, 68th and 71st sessions of the UN General Assembly.
