An eco-action was held in the vicinity of Farab town in Lebap Region of Turkmenistan. The participants planted wild trees to prevent soil salinization, Neutral Turkmenistan Newspaper reported.
Employees of the Lebap Region Department of Environmental Protection, the Charjev district forestry, the Repetek Nature Reserve, the National Institute of Deserts and the district administration took part in the 4-day action. They planted black saxaul seeds and narrow-leaved oleaster seedlings — the plants that are tolerant to soil salinity.
Some of the planted trees will form a parkland in the future. The second plantation will be used as a nursery, from where black saxaul seedlings will be planted in other areas.
The event was held under the agreement between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Project Office of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia. The document provides for measures to enhance ecosystem sustainability, implement advanced agricultural methods and use nature-based solutions to restore ecosystems.
