Discussions on movement of capital city from Bishkek resume in Kyrgyzstan

A parliamentarian Maripov believes that only such a radical measure will solve the problem.

The issue of the movement of the capital city from Bishkek was raised again at Zhogorku Kenesh of Kyrgyzstan. A parliamentarian Bakytbek Maripov stated that this could be an effective solution for traffic jams and air pollution in the city. In his opinion, radical measures will not improve the situation, 24.kg reports.

Maripov proposed considering moving the capital city to Asman city under construction in Issyk-Kul Region, where $10 billion in investment have been attracted.

The parliamentarian emphasised that infrastructure improvements in Bishkek would entail high costs: the movement of the railway will cost $550 million, and the construction of a bypass road will cost over $1 billion. The movement of the capital city and the Cabinet of Ministers will help reduce traffic congestion in Bishkek, the parliamentarian noted.

The idea of moving the capital city was discussed earlier. The southern city of Osh was considered as an alternative, but its location on the border with Uzbekistan raised questions. Amid these discussions, Bishkek continues to face environmental problems caused by smog and the location at the foot of the Tien Shan Mountains.
